A globally robust relationship between water table decline, subsidence rate, and carbon release from peatlands

چکیده
Abstract Peatland ecosystems are globally important carbon stores. Disturbances, such as drainage and climate drying, act to lower peatland water table depths, consequently enhancing soil release subsidence rates. Here, we conduct a global meta-analysis quantify the relationship among depth, subsidence. We find that decline stimulated heterotrophic, rather than autotrophic, respiration, which was associated with an increase in rate. This held across different zones land uses. 81% of total annual respiration for all drained peatlands attributable tropical agriculture forestry temperate agriculture. Globally, estimate that, 645 Mt C yr –1 (401–1025 ) through equivalent approximately 5% anthropogenic emissions. Our findings highlight importance conserving pristine help mitigate change.

[1] Extensive new data from previously unstudied Siberian streams and rivers suggest that mobilization of currently frozen, high-latitude soil carbon is likely over the next century in response to predicted Arctic warming. We present dissolved organic carbon (DOC) measurements from ninety-six watersheds in West Siberia, a region that contains the world’s largest stores of peat carbon, exports m...

Subsidence Rates of Drained Agricultural Peatlands in New Zealand and the Relationship with Time since Drainage.
The drainage and conversion of peatlands to productive agro-ecosystems leads to ongoing surface subsidence because of densification (shrinkage and consolidation) and oxidation of the peat substrate. Knowing the ra0te of this surface subsidence is important for future land-use planning, carbon accounting, and economic analysis of drainage and pumping costs. We measured subsidence rates over the ...
